Irrigation Tips:
During our hot summer months, more then 60 percent of treated water is used outside of the home and therefore it is essential that we reduce water waste when irrigating our lawns. Here are some tips to consider the next time you are watering.

1. Position sprinkler heads to water the lawn and not the pavement.
2. Install drip irrigation systems where practical such as flower gardens or vegetable patches.
3. If you choose to water manually, use inexpensive shut-off timers if possible. These shut-off timers can be purchased at your local irrigation supply store or hardware store. To eliminate water wasted to evaporation, never water during the heat of the day.
4. Aerate your lawn in the Spring or Fall. Aerating will help water reach the root system.
5. Grass that is green may not always need watering. If your lawn lacks water, a black tinge will often develop.
6. Water thoroughly, but less frequently, to encourage deeper roots.
7. Over watering creates an environment that is perfect for fungal diseases to spread. Make sure the surface of your lawn is allotted sufficient drying time between waterings, as this will kill or inhibit the disease.
8. When cutting your lawn, leave 2 inches or more of grass. Doing so will help to shade the roots and promote deeper root growth. Remember to sharpen your lawn mower blades as well.
9. Monitor how much water you apply to your landscaping by placing several marked cans in a particular area. Time how long it takes to fill the can to the one inch mark. One inch of water a week may be sufficient. Water accordingly.
10. Take a walk around your landscaping. If you notice your footprints remain imprinted in the grass, consider aerating or soil amendment to improve water absorption.
