Water Restrictions

• Stage 1

  1. General

  •  Watering by any method may take place for no more than two hours within the allotted watering days at a given restriction stage.
  • Irrigation systems may only run between the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.

  2. Automatically and Manually Controlled Sprinkling Systems

  • Even numbered addresses on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • Odd numbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

  3. Micro-Irrigation or Drip-Irrigation Systems

  • Even numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • Odd numbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
• Stage 2

  1. General

• Stage 4

   1.   Due to the potential for compromised fire protection and a loss of source water supply, no outdoor water use is permitted.

   2.  Automatically and Manually Controlled Sprinkling Systems

  • Usage of Automatically and Manually Controlled Sprinkling Systems is prohibited.

  3.   Micro-Irrigation or Drip-Irrigation Systems

  • Usage of Micro-Irrigation or Drip-Irrigation Systems is prohibited.

Restriction Exceptions

• Food Producing Plants

  In Stages 0-3:

  Food producing plants grown with the intention of being consumed or sold may be watered on any day of the week and any hour of the day as needed. Watering must be limited to only the plants growing food.

  Stage 4:

  Due to the potential for compromised fire protection and a loss of source water supply, no outdoor water use is permitted.

• Hand Watering

  Hand watering of garden plants is allowed on any day at any time. Stage 1-3 water restrictions do not apply to hand-watering.

  It is recommended that water conservation is still practiced and watering is avoided during the heat of the day. 

Watering Methods and Definitions

• Automatically and Manually Controlled Sprinkling Systems

  Automatic Sprinkling Systems: 

  These systems operate with minimal intervention though the use of timers and sensors. A common example is in-ground systems.

  Manual Sprinkling Systems:

  Manual systems operate with manual intervention and supervision. Common examples include oscillating sprinklers and rotary sprinklers. 

• Micro-Irrigation and Drip-Irrigation Systems

  Micro-Irrigation and Drip-Irrigation Systems are the most effective way to water plants in the Okanagan. They deliver water slowly and directly to the root zone of the plants. This ensures your plants receive the exact amount of water they need and minimizes evaporation waste. 

  Weeper hoses, soaker hoses, and similar systems are not considered Micro-Irrigation or Drip Irrigation systems.

• Hand watering

  Hand watering includes the application of water while holding a hand-held watering device such as a hose, watering can, or bucket. A person must be physically holding the hose or container.
